Good Will Hunting: The Analogy Of Trauma

"It's not your fault"

Good Will Hunting is possibly another movie that I personally love to watch over and over again. The characters, the writing, and the directing work so well together. It's amusing to think about how 19-year-olds Ben Affleck and Matt Damon made this masterpiece at such a young age which ultimately won them their first Oscar as well.

Good Will Hunting is a movie about a guy named Will who is gifted with extreme intelligence however he chooses to work as a janitor in Harvard, and he ends his day with going to the bars with his friends. However, his life takes a huge turn of an event when he is spotted by the mathematics professor as he is solving a sum on the board that has taken even for the professor years to solve. The professor observes that Will has a lot of unresolved issues, therefore he decides he set him up with therapists however one after another all of the therapists assigned to Will decide to back out and this is because of Will's defense mechanism. Will is obnoxious and rude towards the therapists and most of the time he manages to touch a sensitive topic about the therapists thus forcing them to give up on him, this goes on until Will meets the therapist that changes his life completely, Sean. Sean calls him out for all of his stupid reasonings and gives the reason for the actual cause of his problems which is 'Fear'. Will is scared to do anything out of his comfort zone, when he is set up for job offers by NSA, he straight up rejects it and when his relationship with the girl he likes starts to get serious he gives out millions of reasons on why he cannot go to California with her. Will is scared of change, he is scared of coming out of his comfort zone thus it is only after being told by his best friend that this entire time the actual problem was Will himself, he decides to ponder over his mistakes. On his last therapy session Will is ultimately reassured by Sean as he tells him that it's not his fault which breaks Will down completely.

Will's journey of overcoming his trauma is nothing but a ride of an emotional rollercoaster. The characters feel real with the emotions that they portray. The very own trauma and insecurities that took over Will's life was completely broken down as Will chooses to take control of his own life by the end of the movie.
