The Perks of being a Wallflower: Coming of Age film done right
"We accept the love that we deserve"
The Perks of being a Wallflower is a movie based on the 1999 young adult novel by American author Steven Chbosky, it is a coming-of-age film following the story of Charlie, an introverted teenager. Although it has been years since I first watched this movie one thing that I would never forget is the feeling that I got after watching this movie. Charlie is a wallflower because he is an extremely observant character, he sees the things happening around him, quietly from the corner. I think the reason why this movie feels so alive is because of the performances by the actors and how their personalities in the movie actually resonate with people in real life, it feels authentic.
Charlie, the protagonist faces difficulties in high school in the beginning of the movie during his freshman year, known to be timid and introverted he soon however gets adopted by an extroverted group of friends, Sam and Patrick. The reason why Charlie is such a quite kid directs back to his abusive childhood. He was sexually assaulted by his aunt and witnessed a rape scene happening right in front of him at a young age.
Charlie's trauma and neglect by the people around him stunted his emotional and social growth which is the reason why Charlie is seen like a wallflower however as the movie progresses Charlie breaks the vicious cycle of abuse. The movie does a great job at exploring the mental state of abused male victims.
Overall, the movie is a great adaptation of the book, and it would only be fair to actually encourage people to watch this movie for themselves to see how amazing the movie is.
