Juice: A Powerful Short film

Juice is a short film directed by Neeraj Ghaywan starring Shefali Shah, this film delves into the dynamics of gender roles, and the misogyny prevalent in Indian households. The movie follows the story of Manju and her husband where they host a gathering with their friends. Just like any other typical Indian family the women in the family along with the friends' wives work in the kitchen while the men enjoy having convos about the economy while making misogynistic remarks about their wives, being completely ignorant towards their struggles and efforts.

The film conveys a very powerful message about the misogyny that we tend to overlook because we have normalized it so much. The climax of the film is unexpected well at least for everyone in the film it is, but when we actually observe Manju's character in the film, she had already reached a breaking point therefore, her quiet rebellion against the men in the room was like a slap to the face hitting them with realization. The ending is liberating not only for Manju as she just stops everything and heads to the living room with a glass of juice and chair in her hands, and she also proceeds to sit amongst all of them, it was a silent slap to all male guests present including her husband, it was a slap against the patriarchal norms that women in Indian households have to go through.

This short film is undoubtedly my favorite films so far, it conveys a deep and powerful message and the entire setting of the film along with Shefali's amazing acting brings the film to life. It is almost as if you are witnessing an actual scene in your household. Manju's silent rebellion speaks more than words could ever, she is an actual inspiration for the women who are still struggling under oppression enslaved by the societal norms.
